I began practicing Yoga and studying various Eastern Religions in 2003. My practice intensified while trying to get
pregnant and I meditated daily and used a CD of "Chakra Chants". In the winter of 2004, I was pregnant with my
second daughter, Emerson Claire. My husband and I chose to use Hypnobirthing techniques in her birth as we wanted
to bring her into the world in as peaceful and natural way as possible. We diligently practiced the relaxation techniques we
were taught. Interestingly, and I don't believe coincidentally, one of the relaxation tapes used the colors of the rainbow
which coincided with the colors of the Chakras . The relaxation techniques now took on a deeper meaning for me.
As I excitedly waited and prepared for the birth, I looked for ways to make the experience an even more meaningful one.
In addition to a traditional Baby Shower, I also had a Blessingway Ceremony. It was a beautifully moving experience. I
asked all of the attendees to bring a bead to make a strand of Birth Beads which I would then take to my birthing
experience. The Birth Beads were in my hand, a reminder of the female energy and support given to me at my
Blessingway, when I delivered 9 pound 8 ounce Emerson naturally and without the assistance of drugs.
Several friends began having children and I wanted to pass on to them the gift of Birth Beads. Often, an opportunity
did not present itself to make the strand with others as mine were. In those cases, I gifted the expectant mother a complete
strand of Birth Beads, sharing with them the meaning and the positive energy I sent with it for their birthing. It was an
honor to know that although I may not be there physically to support the mother (and partner) in the birthing, the Birth
Beads would. Other times I was able to arrange for friends and family of the expectant mother to bring a bead to add to
the strand I had started. In those cases the strand carried the positive energy and support of a group of women: a
powerful symbol to have with you during the birthing experience.
Thus, Birth Beads was "born". Chakra Beads were added shortly thereafter when a friend admired the Birth Beads
Bracelet. The use of the chakras in the design resignated with her, but she commented she had no intention of having
children herself. I did not want my vision of the strands and bracelets to be limited to those who had or intended to have
children. The Chakra Beads design came to me during a quiet meditative state while nursing Emerson.
In 2006, my third daughter, Maya Isabel was born. A beautiful Birth Beads strand was made at my Blessingway
Ceremony which I again used during her birth. Again, using Hynobirthing techniques, Maya was birth naturally and
without the assistance of drugs-weighing in at a whopping .6 oz shy of 11 lbs!!
I hope that your births will be joyful and blessed. May your BirthBeads bring you everything they brought me.
Namaste!
